A tese consiste de uma abordagem histórica dos manuais destinados ao ensino da leitura e da escrita no período imperial brasileiro e segue três linhas de investigação: as condições da produção, as condições da autoria e as condições da leitura. Brasil Império (1822-1889) The empire of the first writing: epitome of a history of literacy primers in the XIX century Abstract: This article is a summary of some of the main arguments of the thesis “The empire of the first writing: a history of the institutionalization of the primer literacy in the XIX century” defended in the Post Graduate program in History of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in June of 2012. The thesis consists of a historical approach of the compendiums destined to the teaching of reading and writing in the Brazilian imperial period and it follows three lines of investigation: the conditions of the production, the conditions of the authorship and the conditions of reading. (1822-1889) L´empire des premières lettres: épitomé d´une histoire de manuels d´alphabétisation au XIXème siècle Résumé: Cet article est un résumé de certains des principaux arguments de la thèse : « L´empire des premières lettres : une histoire de l´institutionnalisation du manuel d´alphabétisation au XIXème siècle » soutenue au Programme d´Études Supérieures en Histoire de l´Université Fédérale de Santa Catarina, en juin 2012. La thèse se compose d´une approche historique des manuels destinés à l´enseignement de la lecture et de l´écriture à la période impériale brésilienne et suit trois axes de recherche : les conditions de la production, les conditions de la qualité d´auteur et les conditions de la lecture.
