A Study on the Security Awareness in Higher Learning Institute Amir Rashid Ghazali Shahabudin Abdullah Centre for Real Estate Studies Faculty of Geoinformation Science & Technology Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Abstract Purpose – This research is to identify the security awareness of the students of UTM. The results from this study can also be used as additional information when improving or integrating their security system. Recommendations for improving the security will also be mentioned. Design/methodology/approach – This study will be focusing on the security awareness and opinions from the students and the issues concerning the safety level of security. What does the UTM security control lacks from the students point of view will be studied also other than their involvement concerning security issues? Findings – What has this study identified is that most of the students are not fully aware of the security provided from the management. Even though some of them are aware, some of them are involved directly or indirectly concerning security incidents. There are some group of students are neglecting their responsibility as a student and as a witness of a crime occurring in front of them. They are considered accomplice and can be indicted according to the laws of Malaysia. Most of unreported cases in UTM involve students directly or indirectly. Students who are innocent and are not involved are feeling insecure throughout their studies in UTM Originality/value – This is an original study that its purpose is to help the management to understand the reason of the increasing cases of crimes in UTM and to encouraged students to be involved in a positive way when it comes to security incidents.
