Since June 2000, the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has delivered the first collisions be- tween Au nuclei at the highest center of mass energies achieved in the laboratory to date. PHOBOS is one of four experiments studying the Au + Au interactions at RHIC. In this paper we will describe the PHO- BOS experiment, and discuss some of the current physics results ob- tained for Au + Au collisions at s NN = 56 and 130 and 200 GeV. They include the study of the charged particle multiplicity as a func- tion of pseudo-rapidity and centrality, and the measurements of the anti- 1219-7580/02/ $ 5.00 c 2002 Akad´ emiai Kiad´ o, Budapest
