The checklist consists of 699 species with two additional subspecies and 21 additional varieties. According to the Red List presented here, 31.0% of the moss flora of Slovakia was evaluated as threatened (categories Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable), 9.2% as near threatened, 7.3% as data deficient taxa and 49.4% of mosses were classified in the Least Concern category. We modified the category Extinct (EX) to Regionally Extinct/Vanished (RE/VA), which now includes 2.9% of the moss flora. Species Grimmia lisae, Hygrohypnum eugyrium, Lewinskya affinis var. bohemica, Niphotrichum elongatum, Oreas martiana, Orthotrichum moravicum, Osculatia bornholmensis, Tortula cernua and T. randii have been reported recently as new for Slovakia. Keywords IUCN categories . Nomenclature . Slovak Republic . Bryophyta Introduction The new checklist presents an updated list of Slovak mosses arranged according to recently accepted synonyms and taxonom- ical changes and includes an updated Red List of Slovak mosses according to commonly accepted IUCN criteria (IUCN 2012). The first checklist that includes all groups of bryophytes in Slovakia was published in 1993 (Kubinská et al. 1993) followed by the checklists Kubinská and Janovicová (1996, 1998). Last checklists (Kubinská et al. 2001a, b) were pub- lished in 2001 and included Red List of Slovak bryophytes, evaluated using the IUCN criteria (IUCN 2001). The most common cause for moss decline is the loss of suitable habitats and gradual degradation of existing ones due to human activities such as agriculture, forestry, water management, environmental pollution, transport and tourism (Janovicová et al. 2003). The environment, as well as the taxonomy and nomenclature of mosses have been changed since the last update (Kubinská et al. 2001b) and several spe- cies new for Slovakia have been recorded (Pilous and Šoltés 2000; Blanár and Petrášová 2007; Šoltés 2008; Raven et al. 2010; Ellis et al. 2011, 2019; Müller 2014; Plášek et al. 2016; Mišíková et al. 2018). Material and methods All moss species that have been recorded in Slovakia up to the end of 2018 were taken into consideration. The updated checklist and Red List are based on previous lists (Kubinská et al. 2001a, b) and are treated according to recent published results. Nomenclature of mosses follows the checklist of European bryophytes (Hill et al. 2006). Nomenclature chang- es were applied to genus Barbula (Kučera et al. 2013), Bryum (Ochyra et al. 2018), Orthotrichum (Plášek et al. 2015; Lara et al. 2016; Plá š ek and Procházková 2019), Hypnum (Schlesak et al. 2018) and Racomitrium (Bednarek-Ochyra et al. 2001; Ochyra et al. 2003; Bednarek-Ochyra et al. 2015), where some species were transferred to newly accepted genera. Accepted names are cited in bold. Species varieties are presented by generally distinguished taxa. Red list The present edition of the Red List follows the IUCN Species Survival Commission Guidelines ( 2012) considering the * Katarína Godovičová godovicova.katarina@gmail.com Pavel Širka pavel.sirka@tuzvo.sk 1 Department of Botany, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava, Révová 39, 811 02 Bratislava, Slovakia 2 Department of Phytology, Faculty of Forestry, Technical University in Zvolen, T.
