Using a European Language Portfolio for Self-Assessment, Goal-Setting and Reflection Fergus O’Dwyer Osaka University Abstract This paper describes the implementation of the European Language Portfolio (ELP) in university English speaking classes and suggests ways for teachers to adapt and introduce the ELP in their own context. The purpose of the ELP is to implement the learning stage outline, self-assessment, goal-setting, and reflection procedures of a learning cycle that surround the learning stages (or chapters) of a textbook. The writer outlines the procedures of one learning stage, demonstrating how can do statements and related assessment are used to connect all elements of the learning cycle. It is felt these practices can facilitate progress toward quantifiable and realistic language-learning goals. If learners record learning and see progress in the short term, this may contribute to learner motivation and autonomy.
