Abstract— Wireless technology is the one that provide the ability of roaming with diversity level of transmission power
in mobile devices. Power availability is countered as the most important factor that constrains all of ad hoc wireless
networks. The Absence of infrastructure in such networks provide fully adaptation of mobility of nodes since it
prevent the usage of any fixed infrastructure such as power cable. Hence, the power consumption is a critical factor
that has main effect on transmission range overall network lifetime. This reason increase the need of distributing the
power consumption rate and the overall power of transmission must be minimized for each connection request and
the congestions also must be minimized. A clustering technique is used to adapt the solution of energy consumption.
According to that, this paper presents reviews of most clustering techniques that improves the power conservative in
mobile ad hoc network and increase the battery usage in ad hoc wireless network devices and conserve the power
energy consumption.

I. INTRODUCTION
Lately, wireless ad hoc networks covered by many researches and studies as an infrastructure-less network under
unpredicted environment with dynamic behaviour to formulate the network. Such network is automatically constructed
where connectivity between devices are dynamically updated. The main characteristics of wireless ad hoc networks are
defined in many researches as a network environment in which most of its members are mobile devices, which provide
dynamically unpredicted topology changes. This indicates that there is no stable communication infrastructure [16]. This
problem promotes many factors that affect this kind of networks, such as batteries limitation, mobility, link breakage, and
low of transmission range, etc. wireless ad hoc networks classified according to their application, type of component or
internal design into the following classifications [7]:
1. Mobile Ad Hoc Networks.
2. Wireless Sensor Networks.
3. Wireless Mesh Networks.
This paper focuses on Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) where mobile nodes communicate with each other using
Multihop wireless link. Since there is no stationary infrastructure in MANET, it gives each node within the network to
act as a router, forwarding data packet for other nodes. The development of dynamic routing protocols is considered as
one of design issues of ad hoc network that can find routes between two communicated nodes efficiently. Also, nodes
heterogeneity must be taken in to account, since nodes may have variety of available resources, and this produces
different level in their roles within the network.
The Solution of nodes heterogeneity is Cluster-Based Routing which also limits the amount of routing information that
propagates inside the network. The concept behind clustering is to partition the network nodes into a number of
overlapping clusters. This gives clustering the ability to make a hierarchical routing in which paths are recorded between
clusters instead of between nodes. The remaining part of this paper shows briefing about the clustering concepts and in
later sections it shows some clustering algorithms that applied in MANETs.
II. CONCEPTS REVIEW
Many researchers defined Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) as a self-configuring platform network of mobile
computing connected by wireless links. Regarding to this, many challenges appear to face this kind of network, such as
route discovery and maintenance.
Almost, all devices in mobile ad hoc networks has same prosperities i.e. batteries usage, power consumption with
respect to transmission range, type of application running on each device, etc…, all make power usage as standard factor
that specify the device lifetime which indicate the overall network lifetime. Since, MANET operates on either
rechargeable or replaceable batteries. Whilst it must works with respect to the absence of infrastructure that come from
the type of applications which make the construction of this kind of network an important issue [10], [12].
