Budak Department of Physics, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Ataturk Uni ersity, 25240 Erzurum, Turkey ¨ Received 13 July 1999; accepted 22 October 1999 Abstract The standard addition method for the determination of As, Sr, In, Sn, Sb, I, Cs and Ba elements in colemanite ore Ž . of Bigadic ¸ region in the city of Balikesir Turkey was applied by using an Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Ž . 241 EDXRF system. Samples are prepared from powder sifted by a 300-mesh sieve. An annular 100 mCi Am radioactive source emitting 59.5 keV photons was used for excitation. The characteristic K X-rays of the different Ž . elements were detected with a Si Li detector. These results are presented and discussed in this paper. 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Introduction X-Ray spectrometry is particularly suited to qualitative and quantitative analysis, since the technique is rapid and almost completely non- destructive, and measurable signals can be ob- tained from as little as a few milligrams of a Corresponding author. In recent years, the EDXRF method has been employed for the identification and de- termination of elements in geological samples by several workers 1 7. In order to evaluate the concentration the dif- ferent approaches used can be considered as Ž. falling into two main groups, i.e. a the mathe- Ž. matical methods; and b the comparative meth- ods. The addition method, in which known amounts of the elements are added to the speci- men, is a subset case of the comparative methods. 0584-854700$ - see front matter 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
