Soetami 36A, Kentingan, Surakarta, Jawa Tengah, 57126. e-mail: diprawira@gmail.com / 081958932277 Abstract The introduction of this Final Project is entitled “Designing Encyclopedia of Animals for 9 to 11- year-old Children as a Promotional Media of Gembira Loka Zoo in Yogyakarta”. The problems examined are: (1) How to design an attractive and informative encyclopedia as an educative and promotional media of Gembira Loka Zoo in Yogyakarta? (2) How to design a promotional media for encyclopedia as a part of promotion of Gembira Loka Zoo in Yogyakarta?. Gembira Loka Zoo is the only zoo in Yogyakarta and it is an interesting tourist attraction. With the increasing number of tourists every year and the emergence of various tourist attractions in Yogyakarta, Gembira Loka Zoo is pushed to be more competitive in tourism. In response to that condition, Gembira Loka Zoo needs to do a promotion effort in order to compete with other tourist attractions in Yogyakarta. Therefore, the presence of a promotional media in the form of an encyclopedia about the animals in Gembira Loka Zoo can hopefully support promoting Gembira Loka Zoo based on educational program rather than a mere promotion. PENDAHULUAN LATAR BELAKANG Indonesia merupakan Negara yang terkenal akan kekayaan keanekaragaman hayati. Diperkirakan Indonesia memiliki sekitar 300.000 jenis satwa liar atau sekitar 17% satwa di dunia diantaranya 515 jenis mamalia, lebih dari 1539 jenis burung, dan memiliki 45% jenis ikan di dunia. Indonesia juga memiliki berbagai jenis satwa-satwa endemik atau satwa yang hanya terdapat di Indonesia saja diantaranya seperti jumlah mamalia endemik terdapat 259 jenis, sekitar 384 jenis burung dan 173 jenis ampibi. Meskipun demikian, Indonesia termasuk kedalam kategori negara yang memiliki daftar tentang satwa-satwa liar yang terancam punah. Saat ini populasi satwa yang ada di Indonesia mengalami penurunan dan terancam akan kepunahan nya, diantaranya satwa yang masuk dalam kategori kritis (critically endangered) sebanyak 69 species, kategori terancam (endangered) sebanyak 197 species dan kategori rentan (vulnerable) sebanyak 539 jenis.
