This multi-layered mechanism creates a distinctive environment in every city. In the case of Tokyo, a change of lifestyle 2) is resulting from the increment and diversity of its residents despite the shrinking population of the country. This city has spread out to a point where it has merged within several cities, but despite its endless sprawl, the remarkable mixture of scales of buildings, within the same street and the presence of small urban elements arbitrarily accommodated, is considered one of Tokyo’s particular characteristics. Just like the law of nature, Tokyo Streets lack a clear outline, organically, following the sense of the whole enveloping all its parts according to a hidden order. These parts are being interconnected by a sequence over time, even if the time is brief, the ambiguity of boundaries generates dynamism in the street, as a time-related characteristic of being non-static. This attribute in the cityscape is key to Japanese culture infuencing from the way people think to the quality of the townscape. As Shelton mentioned, Japanese streets are distinguished from European streets by their performance, working as a canal of information where content prevails over context or form ii) . In the Japanese pedestrian experience with the necessary space to move and connect between buildings, the idea of a building extending into the street suggests the continuous transformation of space. Uniquely, the streets without sidewalks reveal the acknowledgment for undefined outlines and, as discussed by Ashihara, Tokyo demonstrates this regeneration capacity like an Amoeba City iii) . The process of change in Commercial Neighborhoods besides shaping the large, dynamic, modern metropolis, gives an identity and produces a continuous experience over time. Particularly, in the commercial streets, the dynamic process of a constant mixture of buildings usage, the spatial characteristics and the chaotic array of the street elements cause a fluid, regenerating city, this dynamism which attracts pedestrians creating public spaces for a short time, in other words, Ephemerals iv) . From this perspective, in the study of the dynamism of Tokyo at eye level, this research aims to fnd the specifc and common characteristics as a result of the pedestrians making a pause along The dynamism of Tokyo streets accommodating people and cars in the necessary space to move and connect between buildings, constitute the public realm where daily encounters are taking place. The aim of this research is to fnd those paused activities of pedestrians to identify sources and patterns enhanced by the commercial streets as Ephemeral Public Space. Analyzing two streets in Ura-Harajuku as a case study, this thesis analyzes the spatial characteristics linking the street and the ground floor of the shops. The results show a variety of activities associated with the commercial streetscape experience in Japan.
