Chapter 41 Qualitative Investigation of Occupational Health and Safety Practices in Sports Industries Johny Khajuria, L. P. Singh, Sarbjit Singh, and Arjan Singh 1 Introduction The concern to improve productivity, safety and quality in manufacturing industries is increasing. Estimation is that 160 million people are affected by diseases occurred by occupation every year, and more than 2 million workers died due to diseases and accidents caused during work each year. Also, the International Labour Organization (ILO) analyzed that workers suffer at least 335,000 lethal injuries and 270 million accidents annually. Efforts are required to deal with increased human and economic cost of occupational diseases and accidents. To keep workplace safe is not just limited to workers and industries but now becomes a concern of national and global economies whose growth depends on safe working environment. Improper workplace design, non-implementation of rules and regulations, adverse occupational exposures, poor working postures, unavailability of personal protec- tive equipments and inappropriate management programs are some of the common problems of the small-scale industries. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), economic loss up to 10%20% of the gross national product of many countries is caused due to poor occupational health and reduced working capacity of workers. World Health Organization explained that some of the dangers asso- ciated with industry workers are industrial poisons, radiation, hyperbaric, noise, psychosocial stress and physical injuries. The major issues related to health are respiratory health issues. All these hazards together reduce productivity of worker and quality of product and so increase cost. Therefore, it is very dif cult to acquire the aim of the manufacturing industries without considering implementation of ergonomics and safety procedures.
