Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Political Science and Public Administration NAME: Flores, Jessica L. BPA 1-1 UPUAN BY GLOC 9 “Upuan” is a song released by a Filipino-Rapper Artist, Gloc 9, on June 2009. I must acknowledge that he is a great artist in the business for utilizing his talent to bring attention to the Philippine government's wrongdoings. The song is all about addressing the social issues of the country, mainly the government issues, and it is by mentioning the “taong nakaupo” obviously to the “upuan” which used as a metaphor defining the seat of power that controlling the average people in our community. It describes how the country is separated from the ruling elite ̶ which are part of the principalia and to the normal people of the community who does not afford the educational degree that principales have obtained. It also discusses how a person sitting exploits his position to the point where they no longer care about his citizens. This shows that the real purpose of the upuan is never been achieved by the taong nakaupo. Unsurprisingly, this song seems to be so ageless that it resonates with all generations from the time it was made to the present. The above mentioned “taong nakaupo” in the Philippine government up to the present is part of the principalia. This is one of the reasons why those people who are in the seats of the power cannot afford to give the needs of their people, because they never experienced being in the fringe of society. This is linked to the current political dynasty, which also contributes to stifling system in response to public needs. The lyrics highlight how a powerful person lives a pleasant life and how they safeguard their seat from being taken by others. In this modern time we often heard being in politics is worst but clearly it is the politicians, not the politics itself. There are some instances that they behead one other in order to obtain the position they desire, the seat of power. They are also prone to mishandling the nation’s wealth and personnel for self-gain, resulting in deprivation, famine, and mistreatment for many individuals at the bottom of the social ladder. The privileged gain from their money but the less fortunate people struggles to participate in school, buy goods and services, and also meet their basic requirements on a daily basis. This song "Upuan" explores the often topic of governmental corruption and abuse of power by officials and authorities which causes the struggles of Filipinos. The song's point of view is from the perspective of the oppressed citizens who are directly affected by the wrongdoings perpetrated by those in power. In this modern principalia we have wealthy got wealthier, while the needy became much worse. Those in positions of power are just relaxed and doing nothing to improve our country rather than leading its people in the right path so we can all live properly. They never hesitate to work hard, observe and consider the people around them and fulfill their responsibilities with clear intention. The soundtrack's sole purpose was to convey that they (politicians) must hear the plight of the underprivileged the screams for help, good governance, and a better life.
