Chapter 6
Building Technology
The strength of the prefabricated house lies in its popularity, its
cheapness and the industrial base from which it operates. These
are precisely the areas in which modern architecture is
weakest. Modern architecture is unpopular, expensive and
divorced from industrial production.
The government thinks that housebuilders should invest in
factory production and begin making reliable, high quality
houses that are cheap to run as well as cheap to build. Colin
Davies (The Prefabricated Home, Colin Davies. London,
Reaktion Books, 2005)
Abstract My aim is to investigate the most appropriate means of prefabrication to
eco-standards that will enable my house design to be made into a reality. I have
openly relied upon a variety of sources varying from journals, to specialist pro-
fessionals, and organisations connected with this field of work. I summarise the
choices of construction and building services as well as focusing upon advised
solutions for my own house design as seen in Sect. 5.4. In that section, I recom-
mend metal roller shutters over all windows and doors as a security measure. It
amazes me that, whilst they have always been popular in Germany, they have never
caught on in the UK.
6.1 Prefabrication
Building with prefabricated systems encompasses the production and use of pre-planned
components or modules as a solution to build with higher quality and more ef ficiency. It is
associated with dimensional grids, high technical standards, lower costs and the repetition
of components or objects. Prefabricated Systems. By Knaack, Chung-Klatte and
Hasselbach. Published by 4
Prefabricated systems emerged after WW2 as a rapid means of housing the
displaced and homeless. It was a different matter of urgency as compared with
the present crisis, due to the destruction of buildings in our towns and cities.
The problem is that today’s factory produced housing does not necessarily mean
that the quality of provision is being improved. Meeting the demand means building
