With hundreds of thousands of words, German is one of the richest languages in terms of vocabulary. However, studies show that the thousand most frequently used words in German constitute almost three-quarters of all words used in linguistic communication. In this context, it remains an intriguing question to what extent the words in German as a foreign language textbooks overlap with the most frequently used words in German. Although there are some international studies that seek an answer to this question, studies examining German textbooks with Turkish authors in this context are lacking. In addition, the fact that international studies generally focus on written language and ignore spoken language seems as another lack. Therefore, this study aims to compare the words in the German textbook “Wie bitte? A1.1” with the 1,000 most frequently used words in written and spoken German. In order to determine the most frequently used words in the written German, the reference corpus “Digitales Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache” (DWDS) developed by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Science was used. In order to determine the most frequently used words in the spoken German, the reference corpus “Datenbank für Gesprochenes Deutsch” (DGD) developed by the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) was consulted. As a result, it was determined that the words in the German textbook overlap with the most frequently used words in the written German by 26.09% and by 33.45% with the most frequently used words in the spoken German. The reason for this mismatch seems to be that the words in the textbook are chosen according to the semantic field. Therefore, many words that are rarely used are included in the book due to the semantic field.
