UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL AUTÓNOMA DE MÉXICO [andreaolmos@gmail.com; prol@geofisica.unam.mx] Abstract The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México is the largest, eldest and most important university in Latin America. It holds around 290,000 students, as well as 30,000 professors and researchers. Due to this size it is very hard to get organized very valuable products that are generated everyday by this academic population. One example of this are the pedagogical materials produced to be used in lectures, laboratories, distance education courses, etc. This paper reports the advances of a research project which first objective is the development of digital library to organize, preserve an offer to the community all these didactical media and resources. The database complies with international and pedagogical standards for the capture and storage of digital data, as we aim to create a sustainable infrastructure for a digital learning environment. The paper presents the challenges, objectives and advances of this work. The preliminary conclusions are given in the last part of the paper. Introduction Digital technology is a driving force behind many of the changes occurring globally in higher education. Digital libraries (DLs) are emerging as an important area of research and education. Despite the boom in funding for DL research, development, and publications, DL education is behind in funding and practice. Currently, there is little systematic support for developing DL resources and courses beside no coordinated effort to provide an educative resource fund.
