ABSTRACT
The rapid increase in solid waste is a major environmental problem in Libya. Recycling is argued to be a better
solution to the problem. However, there is a broad agreement that there is a gap between the increasing awareness
for recycling and recycling behavior among the consumers. The aim of this study is to describe the Environmental
behavior toward recycling between 100 students from University of Tripoli. The study was used a structured
questionnaire that included 16 items that distributed from March to April in 2019. The findings showed a high
percentage (68%) of students answered they did not recycle, at all. The important reason for this result that the 54%
from students didn't have any information about recycling and its benefits, where 36% responded that lack of
recycling bins in the surrounding decrease the ability to do recycling. The result concluded that absence of
motivation of recycling among University of Tripoli students due to lack of information about recycling and
deficiency of recycling materials, such as recycling bins. This study recommended that the University of Tripoli
should put recycling program in to consideration. In addition, apply recycling program by teaching recycling in
environmental academic courses. This has the potential to significantly reduce environmental problems, specifically
the problem of solid waste.

INTRODUCTION
Universities are a relevant context for studying as
universities have a large number of students and staff, a
broad scale of complex activities, and many operational
processes. Furthermore, they produce high volumes of
waste that have an impact on the environment [1]. The
level of formal education and knowledge about recycling
were found to be positively associated with recycling
behavior [2]. Another study also showed that the
environmental knowledge of the students can improve the
knowledge of their parents [1]. Researchers have noted
that universities and colleges have a moral and ethical
obligation to act responsibly toward the environment and
are expected to be the leaders for environmental protection
[3].
Recycling program can only be successful if people
support and actively participate in it. As pointed out by
previous study [4], it is necessary to determine the drivers
that influence solid waste management specific to each
country context [3]. Encouraging and educating
individuals about pro-environmental behaviors, like
