Report on the Spanish Association of Fuzzy Logic and Technologies In Spain, work related with Fuzzy Sets began at the end of the sixties, when a group led by Prof. E. Trillas of the Politechnic University of Barcelona, began to investigate this subject. Later, in 1990, a group of people linked to the most distinguished Spanish teams in the area of Fuzzy Sets and Systems, decided to create the Spanish Associ- ation of Fuzzy Logic and Technologies (FLAT), to try to coordinate its research, increase its efficiency and try to make certain that its work was used for the maximum benefit of industry in Spain. More concretely, the Association, in which all of the Spanish researchers of the subject are brought together, whetherthey are public organisations or private ones (the numbers of regular members of FLAT at the moment is 150, but it will most probably increase), basically persues the promotion and dissemination of the methods, devel- opments and techniques of Fuzzy Logic and the Technolo- gies based on it at a national level. The members of the Association can be in continuous contact with one another through the electronic message service flat@robinson.ugr.es, by means of which, notices of interest (conferences, courses, published articles, con- gresses, etc.) are circulated. Moreover, to fulfil one of the basic objectives of the association, such as promoting the Fuzzy Logic and its technologies in the world of research and development (R+D), a Spanish distribution list has been created which is available on an international scale, through which it is intended that news that are generated from the association reaches the largest possible number of interested parties. The above-mentioned list, can include members of the association or any interested party, since it is a list open to everybody in the world. The distribution list of Technology and Fuzzy Logic aims to be the divulging medium of the Spanish Association of Fuzzy Logic and Technology activ- ities, and a forum for debate, through which the objectives of coordinating and putting in collaboration those re- searches that work in this field in different academic disci- plines and professional practices, could be reached. On the other hand, amongst the activities that it carries out, there is a strong emphasis on the organisation of congresses and seminars about Technology and Fuzzy Logic, whether they are orientated towards concrete subjects of introduction or updating, requested by an interested collective body or of a general character. In this respect, amongst the coming activities in which the Asso- ciation will collaborate are: ??Information Processing and Management of Uncertain- ty in Knowledge-Based Systems (IPMU’96) which will be held in Granada, 1 5 July 1996. ??Int. Conference on Intelligent Technologies in Human- Related Sciences (ITHURS’96), which will be held in Leon, 5-7 July 1996. ??Sixth IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems (FuzzlEEE’97) which will be held in Barcelona (Catalonia-Spain) I-5 July 1997. ?? VI Spanish Congress on Technologies and Fuzzy Logic (ESTYLF’96), which will be held in Oviedo (Asturias), in the month of September 1996. In relation to this latter congress, it should be pointed out that, up to the present date, the Association has al- ready held five national congresses (in Granada, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Blanes (Gerona) and Murcia), for each one of which the corresponding proceedings has been published. In this congresses many well-known prestigious lectures such as E. Trillas, R.R. Yager, A.F. Rocha, D. Dubois, E.H. Mamdani and P. Bonissone, amongst others, have participated. In these publications, the number and scientific quality of the works presented give faith to the interest that fuzzy logic and its applica- tions raise in our country, and to the relevant role that Spanish researchers play in the development of this field. The successive publications of the Congress have reflec- ted this incessant growth, and have contributed in a great way to its acceleration and consolidation. Moreover, the task of promoting interaction with the business world and industry has been taken on, which is one of the basic objectives of the association. In this way, a specific objec- tive arising from the latest publication has been to explore the potential existing in transfering fuzzy technology to- wards society, analysing the impact of fuzzy logic in the industrial area and the possible forms of cooperation which are opened. With this aim, in the year 1995 and also sponsored by the Association, the first Conference on Transference of Technology and Fuzzy Logic were held. The above-mentioned conferences, as well as the 1996 ESTYLF Congress, try to give an opening towards com- panies and industry. The next VI Congress ESTYLF’96 to be held in Oviedo, like those before, has as an objective the promotion of the investigation of these subjects and to provide a forum for discussion and presentation of new ideas and results, bringing together experts in theory and application, with young researchers who are taking their first steps in this field. Moreover, other additional activities will also be included, orientated to promote interaction with the busi- ness world and industry, it is planned to hold a special session on Transference of Fuzzy Technology, in which the perspective of the University, that of the company and the institutional of the scientific politics come together. As such, there will be guest sessions and demonstrations of applications. Moreover, the aim of the congress is to attract the participation of a certain number of project managers and management from companies. Therefore, the congress will be, once more, an excellent occasion to make contact with potential producers and users of Fuzzy Technology. Besides all the foregoing activities, the Association has also the legal capacity to validate, if it is asked, prod- ucts related to fuzzy logic and its technologies. Equally
