Radiation Induced Mutation Breeding in Papaya (Carica papaya L.). Biotica Research Today 4(1): 074-076. Corresponding Author Keywords Open Access [ [ Artcle: RT891 C reaton of variability is a prerequisite for crop improvement in any plant breeding programme. Spontaneous mutatons have played an important role in the improvement certain characters in some of the fruit crops. Inducton of variability using physical mutagen, gamma rays has been used for long tme by breeders. Papaya is a polygamous plant three basic types of fowers viz. male, female and hermaphrodite (bisexual). Irradiaton-induced mutaton is increasingly used as a complementary tool in plant breeding. As per Case study I, inducton of variability in two cultvars of papaya viz. Coorg Honey Dew and Sunrise Solo was tried using gamma rays. As per Case study II, the objectves were to generate variability in papaya variety Eksotka by gamma irradiaton and to screen for variants that have resistance to ring spot virus disease and delayed fruit ripening characteristcs. Popular Article Introducton P apaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the important fruit crops of tropical and subtropical region of the world. Owing to its unique characteristcs, papaya cultvaton has become very popular among the fruit growers. Being short duraton, early maturing, quick growing and dwarf in nature, it can be grown very successfully in the orchards of major fruit crops. Due to nutritonal and medicinal values, it fetches very good price in the market. Among the breeding techniques, mutaton is one of the important methods adopted by plant breeders to create variability in a number of species. Natural mutants have played an important role in creatng variability in many species. However, induced mutatons have not brought out the desirable results in many of the fruit crops. A number of induced mutatons have ended up as chimeras in fruit crops and intrasomatc selectons have reversed the mutant efects. A dwarf gynodioecious variety in papaya has been developed by induced mutaton of gamma irradiaton in papaya. Mutaton directly afected the genetc structure of plants. Dwarfness and earliness in fowering are important characters for high density plantng. Therefore, the present study has been formulated to study the efect of seed treatment with ethyl methane sulphonate on fruit quality of papaya (Table 1). Flower Biology of Papaya • Papaya belongs to a small family with 35 species. • 32 species are Dioecious, 2 triocious and 1 Monocious. • Papaya is somewhat unusual in that it is triocious with three basic sex forms- female, male and hermaphrodite. • Varietes typically either dioecious or gynodioecious. • Male trees are characterized by long and many fowers. • Female trees have short inforescences with few fowers, have no stamens.
