The purpose of this research is to find out the feasibility of poetical teaching technique in science and technology classes in terms of the students’ achievements and attitudes. The research methodology employed in this study is quasi-experimental design. Sixth grade science and technology lesson unit ‘The Particular Structure of Elements’ was taught with activities prepared in accordance with poetical teaching technique vs. traditional teaching methods. The changes students’ attitudes toward science and technology class and the students’ academic achievements for both classes were investigated. The experimental group consisted of 32 students who were willing to write a poem. The control group consisted of 20 students. An achievement instrument was administered to both groups as pre- and post-tests. In order to determine the changes of students’ attitudes toward science and technology, The Science Attitude Scale was administered to both groups as pre- and post-tests. According to the results obtained from the research; the attitudes of students toward science and technology did not change significantly but the students’ achievement did as a result of the intervention. Key Words: poetical teaching, science attitude, student achievement SUMMARY Purpose and significance: The purpose of this research is to find out the feasibility of poetical teaching technique in science and technology classes in terms of the students’ achievements and attitudes. The poetical teaching technique is considered within the multiple intelligence theory that is an important theory of today’s educational programmes. Methods: The research was conducted in De!irmenli Town, Ni!de at De!irmenli Primary Education School which is a public school. The research methodology employed in this study is quasi- experimental design. The experimental group consisted of 32 students who were willing to write a poem. The control group consisted of 20 students. An achievement instrument was administered to both groups as pre- and post-tests. In order to determine the changes of students’ attitudes toward science and technology, the Science Attitude Scale was administered to both groups as pre- and post- tests. Results: ANCOVA was applied to the data as a statistical technique. According to the results obtained from the research; the attitudes of students toward science and technology did not change significantly but students’ achievement did as a result of the intervention. That is to say, the students benefited from the intervention with respect to achievement in science and technology class. On the other hand, a significant change was not observed for the students’ attitudes toward science and technology. Discussion and conclusions: The results obtained from this study are similar to the previous research findings in terms of students’ achievement. However, it is a contradictory finding compared to those of the previous research is that students’ attitudes toward the class did not change as a result of intervention. This may be due to a short term intervention. There is a need for more research employing poetical technique to investigate students’ attitudes toward science and technology by extending the period of time in interventions. 1 Science and Technology Teacher, De!irmenli Primary School, Ni!de, cakyol51@hotmail.com 2 Assisstant Professor, Ni!de University, Faculty of Education, adikici@nigde.edu.tr
