Achievement goal profiles, and perceptions of motivational climate and physical ability in male Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners Karsten Øvretveit ABCDE , Stig Arve Sæther D , Ingar Mehus ACD Department of Sociology and Political Science, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway Received: 19 August 2018; Accepted: 31 August 2018; Published online: 22 October 2018 AoBID: 12301 Abstract Background and Study Aim: Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martal art with high rates of atriton. At present, litle is known about the achieve- ment goals of martal arts practtoners, partcularly in BJJ. Thus, our aim was knowledge about achievement goal orientatons and perceptons of the motvatonal climate in a BJJ academy. We hypothesized that mas- tery-approach goals would correlate with weekly training duraton, that goal orientaton scores would refect the corresponding higher-order motvatonal climate score, and that white belt practtoners would perceive the motvatonal climate as more performance-oriented than higher belt ranks. Material and Methods: The sample comprised 42 males aged 31.9 ±6.2 years, with 5.4 ±3.8 years of training experience and a weekly training duraton of 7.7 ±3.4 hours per week. The 3x2 Achievement Goal Questonnaire for Sport (3x2 AGQ-S) was used to assess achievement goal orientatons. Perceptons of the motvatonal climate were measured with the Perceived Motvatonal Climate in Sport Questonnaire (PMCSQ-2). The 10-item Perceived Physical Ability (PPA) subscale of the Physical Self-Efcacy Scale was used to evaluate perceived physical ability. Results: Overall, the practtoners emphasized mastery-approach goals, which was congruous, but not signifcantly as- sociated with higher-order motvatonal climate scores. Rank correlated both with goal orientatons and per- ceived motvatonal climate. Additonally, weekly training duraton and style preference were associated with task-approach goals. Conclusions: Brazilian jiu-jitsu practtoners appear to focus on mastery, making them more likely to demonstrate adaptve behaviour when facing adversity. These fndings support previous observatons on the compatbility of mas- tery goals and compettve martal arts.
