O LADRÃO DA BABILÔNIA 1 : LINGUAGEM, POESIA E PODER THE BURGLAR OF BABYLON: LANGUAGE, POETRY AND POWER Alex Santana Costa 2 Jackson Chediak 3 Taiane Cortez de Souza Chediak 4 RESUMO Sem o entendimento de que a língua está em constante modificação, o que ocorre é a marginalização das variações e mantém-se a ideia de que há somente uma forma correta de fazer uso da linguagem. Considerando isso, este estudo teve por objetivo analisar o poema O ladrão da Babilônia, de autoria da poeta Elizabeth Bishop, estadunidense, à luz da Sociolinguística, em especial, sobre as variações linguísticas, a fim de contribuir para desconstruir a ideia de que há somente uma forma correta de falar. Tal poema foi eleito para fins de análise por enaltecer a variante padrão da língua portuguesa como a única possível e, assim, contribuir por desvalorizar as variações da língua, processos pelos quais esta se atualiza, renova-se. A análise deu-se por revisão bibliográfica e os resultados encontrados apontam que, tanto na língua inglesa quanto na tradução do poema, feita pelo poeta e tradutor brasileiro Paulo Henriques Britto, o discurso que se faz presente no poema reforça a equivocada ideia de que há uma única forma correta de expressão, de dizer o que se pretende, como se a língua fosse imutável e dissociada das necessidades de expressão de seus falantes. Para a poeta, aquele que fala de forma não-padrão está também fora do padrão, o que, por sua vez, coloca o falante desta forma em uma condição de marginalidade, condição esta que resulta em preconceito linguístico. ABSTRACT Without the understanding that the language is constantly changing, what happens is the marginalization of variations and the idea remains that there is only one correct way of using language. Considering this, this study aimed to analyze the poem The Burglar of Babylon, written by the North American poet Elizabeth Bishop, from the perspective of Sociolinguistics, especially on linguistic variations, in order to contribute to deconstruct the idea that there are only a correct way of speaking. This poem was chosen for analysis purposes because it praises the standard variant of the Portuguese language as the only possible one and, thus, contributes to devalue the variations of the language, processes by which it is updated, renewed itself. The analysis was carried out through a bibliographic review and the results found show that, both in the English language and in the translation of the poem, made by the Brazilian poet and translator Paulo Henriques Britto, the discourse that is present in the poem reinforces the mistaken idea that there are a single correct form of expression, to say what is intended, as if the language were immutable and dissociated from the needs of expression of its speakers. For the poet, the one who speaks in a non-standard way is also out of the standard, which, in turn, puts the speaker, in this way, in a condition of marginality, a condition that results in linguistic prejudice.
