Bridging the Gap: eLearning in Maritime Education Maria Cristina P. Arante John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Arevalo Sto. Niño Sur, Arevalo, Iloilo City Abstract As maritime industry is characterized by a growing and rapid development in the communication systems, the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, with its commitment on the “development of a culture of excellence in maritime education and training”, adapted Online Distance Learning by converging instructions in multimedia and web platform via the Internet. This gratifies the University’s innovation on making a sustainable high-global standard, interactive and collaborative learning as an alternative form of gaining education regardless of distance, space and time. This paper aims to determine the effectiveness of online learning to students who are taking Modular courses via the eLearning portal of University. A survey methodology was employed, involving a random sample from the undergraduate learners. The study found that features in eLearning such as user-friendly and icon-based interface has a significant effect on students. The effectiveness of online learning based on the data analysis result also shows that students can learn well and attain learning outcomes in the eLearning environment.
