INDONESIA DEFENSE STRATEGY DEALING WITH SHIFT
THE UNITED STATES STRATEGY IN ASIA PACIFIC

Abstract
The end of the cold war marked a significant shift in the international
system in the Asia Pacific region. The emergence of China as a new
emerging power and great economic power, bringing the United
States (US) to implement policy Rebalancing Strategy. To strengthen
its presence in Asia-Pacific A puts 2,500 marines in Darwin,
Australia. This is a challenge for Indonesia that is geographically
adjacent. The existence of a US base can be a threat at any time. The
US can attack Indonesia with close proximity and a very short time. If
not taken seriously, it will have an impact on Indonesia's security
stability. Indonesia's defense strategy was developed both militarily
and non-military. Military by gradually modernizing and nirmiliter
defense developed by carrying out diplomatic functions.

Preliminary
Security in the study of
international relations is used to
describe the development of several
approaches, especially realist and
neorealis. Security is an important
concept that is always used and viewed
as a constant exclusive feature of
international relations (Buzan, 1991:
212). Security is the ability of states
and communities to maintain their
independence identity and functional
integrity. In order to maintain its
security, the state is willing to use all
sorts of ways including military force
to achieve it.
The emergence of China as a
new emerging power and great
economic power in the Asia Pacific
region, bringing the United States (US)
again shifted focus attention on the
Asia Pacific region by rebuilding and
developing relations and cooperation
with allied countries. As a country
with the largest economy in the world
the US wants to maintain and
strengthen its presence and role in
