Emotional intelligence of leaders can be accessed through select components or dimensions which will reflect the leaders’ efficiency. In this study an attempt is made to evaluate the Emotional intelligence in Leadership of political leaders. Further, a field survey is conducted with an aim to examine the impact of emotional intelligence on leadership effectiveness of select regional parties through ascertaining the perception of public respondents. Further, correlation analysis is performed to determine the relationship among the competences of Emotional intelligence. The study is based on primary and secondary data sources. The study helps to assess the significance of emotional intelligence on leadership effectiveness. Key words: Self Awareness, Self management, Social Awareness, Emotional Intelligence 1. Conceptual overview of Leadership and Emotional Intelligence Leadership is the life organ for the success or failure of sustainability of political parties. A leader possesses distinctive qualities which help him lead the party. Leaders in the present era have been facing stiff competition to cope up with globalization, mushrooming of new leaders, and adoption to latest trends in technology. Effective leadership tackles the complexities arising in the party. It creates the vision that the party cadre wishes to fulfill. Leadership is the process of influencing the behavior of others to work willingly and enthusiastically for achieving predetermined goals. According to Tennenbaum “Leadership is the interpersonal influence exercised in a situation and directed through the communication process, towards the attainment of a specified goal or goals”. The Emotional intelligence focus on the abilities of the leader to understand, evaluate and manage the emotions in such a manner that will reflect his decision-making. The term Emotional intelligence pertaining to Leadership was first coined by John Mayer and Peter Salovey(1990), later the concepts of emotional intelligence are popularized by Daniel Goleman, the famous psychologist. The study on Emotional intelligence published in Harvard Business Review reveals that the emotional intelligence is different to Intelligence quotient and the skills required for a leader to manage things will be supported by emotional intelligence. The Emotional intelligence is based on 4 critical components. These include: a. Self-awareness is understanding own emotions and their effects on his performance. b. Self-management of tasks and responsibilities c. Social awareness of current environment at national and international level d. Having better relationship through networking 2. Studies on Emotional Intelligence in Leadership The following are some of the important studies focused on Emotional intelligence in Leadership. The “Leadership Emotional Intelligence Performance Accelerator” is an assessment model developed to assess the leadership on a 360 degrees assessment. The survey is based on Ninety two statements framed to describe various leadership behaviours. The leadership Emotional intelligence capabilities are grouped into nineteen leadership styles.
