Scholar Centre of South Asian Studies School of International Relation (SIS) Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi 110067 Abstract In present time, media as a main key factor in decision-making process in terms of political, social, cultural, economic and geographical. It helps to establish democracy, make bonding with people and furnish the ideas in the society. There are so many factors which effect media’s role like Television Rating Point, Media Net, Private Treaty, Ownership and Yellow Journalism etc. These are keys point to decide media’s role in particular country. Today Nepal is one of the smallest democratic country in the world. In Nepal, media had so much restriction in past decades but it could be proved to encourage the people in democratic process and played a vital role in political transition of Nepal. Keywords: Media, Political Transition, Civil Society, Good Governance, Fundamental Rights etc. Introduction: In twenty first century media as a main key factor in decision-making process in terms of political, social, cultural, economic and geographical. It plays a significant role in shaping of perception, transmit information, crystallizing people’s opinions and setting up trends and agenda. It is significantly promoting trade, business and cultural activities of state, nation and across the globe. Media like a voice of common people which also raising awareness. It is a tool of influence which play vital role to promote activism in the society and help to drive action. It also helps curbing social evils prevailing in the society. Media can help to establish democracy, make bonding with people and furnish the ideas in the society. It helps to promote good governance in any country or region as well as try to make virtuous relationship between two countries. It also articulate the public opinion and attitude in particular subjects. The United Nations Development Programme (1997) titled Corruption and Good Governancesays that addressing poverty requires not just a transfer of economic resources to the needy but also making information available to the poor so that they can participate more meaningfully in political and social life.” Democracies can’t be rooted if the common people are kept out of the public arena. The argument is that effective media is the key of development for the poor and powerless people to take part in public life by getting information from the media. There are so many factors which effect media’s role like Television Rating Point (T.R.P.), Media Net, Private Treaty, Ownership and Yellow Journalism etc. These are keys point to decide media’s role in particular country. Amartya Sen (1999) in his book titled “Development and Freedom” talked about the need for transparency guarantees such as a free press and the free flow of information.
