Studies in properties of waxes by conventional and sophisticated methods. Atul P. Dwivedi , Dr. G. K. Ghosal , Dr. P. N. Belkhode Laxminarayan Institute of Technology Nagpur Abstract: The waxes are one of the important raw materials for various industries. The Selection of waxes i.e. what type of wax to be used for the particular operation will depend on the properties of the waxes. The most widely used waxes are petroleum waxes i.e. Paraffin waxes and microcrystalline waxes, Other waxes like animal waxes, plant waxes and other types of waxes are used for specialty purpose. The waxes are used in paper industries, food industry, as lubricants and in medical applications. This paper deals with the waxes, their properties like penetration index, oil content, melting point and structural properties using Sophisticated instruments like FTIR, DSC etc. Keywords:- Waxes, Oil content, FTIR, DSC etc. 1. Introduction:- The natural waxy materials have been used for various purposes from ancient times. Their importance is increasing day by day. Beeswax is one of the natural waxy materials found in nature easily. The diversity of the natural waxes gives a range of usages[1]. Synthetic waxes have also served many purposes after the beginning of the industrial revolution throughout the world. Paraffin wax and microcrystalline wax are the synthetic waxy materials coming from petroleum refinery.[2] The most important physical property for customers is usually the hardness which is determined by the needle-penetration between 25 and 45°C (ASTM D 1321). Low penetration values in paraffin waxes are therefore a high quality parameter. The known parameters which dominate the needle penetration are the amount of n-alkanes, their average chain length, the n-distribution width and the amount of short chain length n-alkanes [3].
