Грей воссоздает образы могущественных пророчиц древних скандинавов, запечатленных в мифологических песнях «Старшей Эдды» («Роковая судьба Бальдра», «Песнь валькирий»). Передавая поэтическим слогом содержание древнеисландских литературных памятников, Грей сохраняет поэтику эддической песни со всей ее неясностью, амбивалентностью, недосказанностью, где очень многое не названо, а лишь подразумевается, ибо главная тема — это пророчество, а главные героини — провидицы, способные предначертать судьбы мира. Abstract Gray’s odes of prophecy «The Descent of Odin» and «The Fatal Sisters», which he rendered from the Norse, represent the feminine power of prophecy revealed in the Older Edda («Balder's Fate» and «The Song of the Valkyries»). Gray follows the poetics of the Edda songs with their uncertainty, ambivalence, and vagueness where many things are not defined but mostly implied that fully corresponds to the language of prophecy because the major theme of the odes is prophecy and the heroines are prophetic maids able to predetermine the fate of the world.
