Mitokondriyal gen defektleri semptomları ve şiddeti değişen çeşitli hastalık ve sendrom- lara neden olur. Mitokondriyal hastalıklarda bugün için kesin, küratif bir tedavi yoktur. Bu hasta- lıklarda dönüm noktası, 2008 yılında gündeme gelen “mitokondri değiştirme terapisi” olmuştur. Bu yöntemle dünyaya gelen bebekler (daha yaygın tabirle “üç ebeveynli bebekler”) üremeye yardımcı teknolojiler ve de iki kadının ve bir erkeğin genetik materyalleri kullanılarak elde edi- len bebeklerdir. Bu çalışmada mitokondri değiştirme terapisi tıbbi, etik ve hukuki yönlerden ele alınmıştır. Anahtar Sözcükler: etik; hukuk; mitokondri değiştirme terapisi; mitokondri nakli; üç ebeveynli bebek Abstract The mitochondrion, found in almost all human cells, is the only organelle that contains DNA, except for the nucleus. Mitochondrial gene defects lead to diferent diseases and syndromes with varying symptoms and severity. “Mitochondrial replacement therapy,” introduced in 2008, has been a milestone in the treatment of mitochondrial diseases, for which there is still no cure. Babies resulting from this procedure, colloquially called “three-parent babies,” are conceived with the use of assisted reproductive technologies and genetic material from two women and one man. This study deals with mitochondrial replacement therapy from medical, ethical, and legal perspectives.
