iTELL (Indonesia Technology Enhanced Language Learning) 4 Augmented Reality for Young Learners Finita Dewi Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia finita.dewi@gmail.com Abstract Augmented Reality (AR) is starting to gain its popularity as it is considered to have pedagogical potentials which offer new and meaningful learning experiences for students. AR could cater to children’s curiosity by providing opportunities to explore both real-world and virtual-world in a close-to-authentic way. By accessing some information that was augmented through pictures, texts, videos, and 3D objects to 2D pictures, children can get accessed to virtual learning resources that are hardly accessible in the real world. This article will discuss augmented reality technology in general and then focus on the pedagogical potential of AR for teaching young learners. Some AR applications that have the potential for play and learning activities with young children will be discussed in the final section. Key words: Augmented Reality, Young Learners, 3D objects Introduction The classic expression “Tell me, I’ll forget, Show me, I’ll remember, Involve me, I’ll understand” is known among educators, not as mere proverbs, but also challenges educators to continue to find the best way to increase the level of involvement and engagement of students in their learning process. A number of learning techniques and methods continue to be developed in response to these challenges. Technological innovations also contribute in facilitating the improvement of the quality of learning that can involve students more actively in student-centered and student-friendly learning activities. The development of technology that continues to skyrocket very quickly, especially in developed countries, allows classes to be equipped with various technological tools that in the previous decade, had never been known. The utilization of technology in the world of education should be able to provide conditions of learning that were previously not possible without the existence of technological tools. The integration of technology in education should not educate in the old way using new technology but educate in new ways or methods with the latest technology as well. Innovations in technology-integrated learning enable students to learn in different environments, interact, explore, and be creative in different ways that could not have been done before. Augmented Reality technology can 'juggle' learning media that used to be ordinary to be very interesting. Features and Pedagogical Potentials of AR for Young Learners AR has features that are believed to create new ways of learning and provide a pleasant learning experience for students. This section will explore AR features based on their pedagogical potential. Research shows that AR can help students 1) learn certain content through a 3D perspective, 2) get collaborative learning conditions and be relevant to students' contexts. 3) feel the existence of virtual and multidimensional objects in the same environment as them, 4) visualize things that were previously difficult to imagine, and 5) find
