The purpose of this research was to diagnose opportunities for the development of ATs in a psychiatric hospital located in southern Brazil, using as a basis design management. The first part of the research was theoretical, based on the literature review of the central themes; and the second part is characterized as applied research, through on-site surveys and a diagnosis of the psychiatric hospital, considering a systematic approach, resulting in the identification of opportunities for design in Assistive Technology. In conclu‐ sion, regarding the hospital diagnosis it was possible to understand the func‐ tioning of the system with its internal and external actors, and the sectors that presented the greatest opportunities for the use of design in Assistive Tech‐ nology, which were: (1) the Rehabilitation Sector; (2) Occupational Therapy, (3) Psychology; (4) Pharmacy; (5) Nursing, among other opportunities identi‐ fied in the field of Assistive Technology. They offer specialized inpatient and residential services for the treatment of mental disorders [1]. In the Brazilian context, some of these institutions, besides offering treatment for mental illnesses, harbor patients with chronic mental disorders, remnants of treatments that were based on hospitalization for long periods. As shown in Bezerra research [2], these asylum patients, because of their long stay in these institutions, lost their family © Springer International Publishing AG 2018 F. Rebelo and M.
