Taxonomic notes on the genus Gonycentrum Bergroth
(Hemiptera: Tingidae)
The monotypic phatnomatine genus Pampacader (with its single species P . cicchinoi) was recently
described from Argentina (Carpintero & Montemayor 2005) as the first genus of the tribe
Phatnomatini recorded from Buenos Aires province and the third (after Phatnoma Fieber and
Eocader Drake & Hambelton) known from Argentina. The genus was then soon compared with
Ambarcader Perrichot, Nel, Guilbert & Néraudeau, described from the Lower Cretaceous amber of
France, in a discussion of the systematic position of this new fossil genus within the family
(Perrichot et al. 2006).
However, all the characters as well as the figures given for Pampacader cicchinoi in its original
description (Carpintero & Montemayor 2005) have clearly demonstrated that it is congeneric with
Gonycentrum coronatum (Fieber, 1844), a species perhaps unknown to Carpintero & Montemayor
(op. cit.) because of its Old World distribution.
Therefore, the following taxonomic changes are proposed here: Gonycentrum Bergroth, 1898
(=Pampacader Carpintero & Montemayor, 2005 new synonym); Pampacader cicchinoi
Carpintero & Montemayor, 2005 = Gonycentrum cicchinoi (Carpintero & Montemayor, 2005) new
combination. Here we also give all data on the distribution of the genus Gonycentrum, and a key to
all its species.
Gonycentrum Bergroth
Gonycentrum Bergroth, 1898: 9. Type species: Teleia coronata Fieber, 1844, monobasic.
Pampacader Carpintero & Montemayor, 2005: 58. Type species: Pampacader cicchinoi Carpintero & Mon-
temayor, 2005, new synonym.
Gonycentrum cicchinoi (Carpintero & Montemayor, 2005), new combination
Pampacader cicchinoi Carpintero & Montemayor, 2005: 59 (Argentina).
A list of known species of Gonycentrum
1. coronatum (Fieber, 1844) [India (“Ostindien”), Sri Lanka (Alawala Province, Uwa Province)];
2. chadense Duarte Rodrigues, 1978 [Chad (Bebedja), Sudan (Wad Medani)];
3. heissi B. Lis, 2006 [Madagascar (Antsiranana Province)];
