Abstract. The adoption of technology will usually affect its users. Moreover,
technology such as mobile devices have become important for mobile users to
perform everyday tasks. This study discusses the effects of using mobile devices
among older people. The concerning matters are gathered from their experiences
and observations they have made from their surroundings. A qualitative method
is employed where interview and focus groups were conducted with twenty-one
respondents aged 55 and above. The results showed that older people are
concerned with the addictive use of mobile devices, lack of relationship with
human, and misuse of mobile devices. However, older people have also
observed the positive effect of using mobile devices as a learning tool for special
children.

1 Introduction
Technology such as mobile devices are commonly used because of its features and
applications that allow mobile users to ef ficiently perform multiple tasks such as
communication, education, entertainment, financial, navigation and much more. The
adoption of mobile devices has made the use of desktop computers obsolete in many
ways as mobile device assists in tasks completion while being mobile [1, 2].
Lots of mobile functions and years of experience in using the devices, have evolved
the way mobile users behaved and make social interaction. For instance, the use of
mobile devices have challenged traditional concepts of space and time, as well as
encourages private interaction within public spaces [3]. These have influenced the way
mobile users engage with each other, conceptualise their identity and interact with
physical world.
The use of mobile devices enhances the life of people in many ways including older
people. They are interested to adopt mobile devices as they are aware of the benefits in
which it can assist them to maintain their well-being [4, 5] especially in facilitating
social relationships with the younger generation (children) and community, promoting
ageing-in-place and increasing their social status and self-motivation by being at par
