SCOPE, DELIMITATION AND DEFINITION OF TERMS IN RESEARCH. By BERNARD GABRIEL OKURUT KYAMBOGO UNIVERSITY, KAMPALA, UGANDA. Note, This paper is a brief summary of the meaning of scope, delimitaon and definion of terms as used in research. Presented by Bernard Gabriel Okurut. Scope and delimitaons are two important elements of a research paper or thesis. The scope if a study in the thesis of or research contains explanaons of what informaon or subject is being analyzed. It is usually followed by an explanaon of the limitaons of research. Research is usually limited by scope in sample size, me and geographic area. Delimitaons on the other hand can be defined as the descripon of the scope of study. It explains why definite aspects the subjects were chosen and why the other were excluded. It also menons the research methods used as well as the certain theories that applied to the data. Definions of terms, it is important to define unusual terms that could be misinterpreted since these definions could help establish the frame of reference with which the researcher approaches the problem. Having briefly introduced the terms scope, delimitaon and definion of terms as used in research, it is imperave to explain them in a broader perspecve as presented below. Scope, The scope of the study explains the extent to which the research will be explored in the work and specifies the parameters within which the work will be operang. The problem you seek to resolve will fit within certain parameters. Scope has also been defined as the extent of the area or subject maer that something deals with. It is important to narrow down the research topic and limit the scope of the study. The researcher should inform the readers about the limits of or coverage of the study. The scope idenfies the boundaries of the study in terms of subject, objecves, facilies, area, me, frame, and the issues to which the research is focused.
