A BSTRACT
Background: Esthetics of fuorosis afected compromised maxillary incisors may infuence the psychological well-being of an emotionally and
physically developing child.
Aim and objective: To evaluate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), esthetic perceptions and concerns of children due to fuorosis
afected permanent maxillary central incisors.
Design: A convenient sample of 65 children, 8–12 years were included in the study. The clinical records of the child’s fuorosis perception were
collected by Social Impact of Dental Disease Questionnaire and Dental Impact on Daily performance (DIDP) questionnaire that are OHRQoL
indicators and examined for fuorosis using the WHO, 2013 Criteria and were scored. Overall OHRQoL scores were calculated by summing all
the responses in the questionnaire.
Results: Mild fuorosis and a more acceptable appearance with satisfed OHRQoL were signifcant factors for children’s perception of good oral
health. The diference in child perception was signifcant in the group with fuorosis experience.
Conclusion: Esthetic consideration is vital in fuorosed maxillary incisors in early mixed dentition.

I NTRODUCTION
Dental fuorosis is a highly prevalent developmental enamel defect
of teeth caused by the ingestion of an excess of fuoride ions during
tooth enamel formation, early maturation, and developmental
stages resulting in the formation of subsurface enamel porosity.
It has caused esthetic displeasure, psychological and behavioral
complications in afected individuals. Clinically, appear as barely
discernable white marks, in mild fuorosis, to confuent pitting and
discoloration of afected teeth in severe forms. Still, it can have a
signifcant psychological impact on patients particularly middle
school children resulting in an impact on self-esteem with long-
lasting efects on an individual’s mental and emotional health.
Although fuoride provides a protective beneft against dental
caries, therefore reduce the negative impact of dental caries on
oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) but if consumed in
greater amounts in early childhood can have the adverse efect
of causing dental fuorosis and increases negative impacts of
fuorosis on OHRQoL. As teeth develop at diferent times, the
period of susceptibility to fuorosis is diferent for diferent teeth
and zones.
The present study aimed to evaluate and assess the perception,
concerns, and the impact of dental fuorosis on the OHRQoL among
8–12-year-old school children and to establish reliable baseline
data for the development of plans to form national and regional
defuoridation programs.
