A case study is, also, presented as well as some technical and economic aspects that point out the advantages of the vertical machining center involved. Key-Words: - vertical machining center, computer numerical control, ATC unit, accuracy, cutting efficiency, high speed 1 Introduction Surpassing the competitive model made in Taiwan and Korea., the FEELER products were dedicated to the pursuit of higher performance vertical machining center to help customers remain competitive. FEELER’s HV series was designed to integrate many innovative features into the existing models. The HV Series features outstand machine structures, accuracy and machining efficiency, highly surpassing existing models [1]. It’s an excellent model especially ideal for today’s high speed machining of complex and high precision parts [3], [4]. Also, it can be stated that it has the same level of machining performance and accuracy as any Japanese and/or European machining center. The market orientation is toward CNC vertical machining centre which proved to be more efficient – allowing high cutting speed and offering very good accuracy [2]. These type of machining centers involve high probability that a functional unit will perform its required function for a specified interval under stated conditions – meaning good reliability is ensured. Also, there is the ability of something to "fail well" - failing without catastrophic consequences. There are many types of CNC machining centers [5], each of them offering advantages, as well as disadvantages, the purpose of this article being that of pointing out new constructive solutions for a vertical machining center made by FEELER Company and using a high performance FANUC controller. 2. Constructive Solutions for HV Series 2.1 HV series machine structure. As, no counter-balance weight design avoided vibrations of chain, this new proposed design avoids oscillation caused by counter-balance weight that may affect movement stability on Z- axis. Another benefit is that of greatly reduced vibration when performing peck-drilling operation. Column structure is reinforced by cross ribs to upgrade torsion torque resistant capability, as seen in figure 1. The new column design offers a 15% higher rigidity when compared to the old design. a. old design b. new design Fig. 1 Column structure design MATHEMATICAL METHODS AND APPLIED COMPUTING ISSN: 1790-2769 743 ISBN: 978-960-474-124-3
