Person-Centered Quarterly Spring 2022 25 It’s a kind of MAGIC A fresh look at an old Freudian idea with a Person-centred twist at the end Sebastian Heid It’s late February 2022. Like millions of people all over the world I find myself glued to my computer screen following the live streams of at least half a dozen TV channels and newspapers, desperately trying to find out the latest news from the Ukraine. Fully focused in vain attempt to try and make sense of it all. Trying to read Putin’s mind and predicting the turn of events. When I allowed myself to take a little step back I could not help thinking, what am I doing here? Where does that idea come from - that if only I could just analyse all that information and somehow create a co- herent narrative in my head that could give me some kind of control over the whole situation? What kind of weird magic is that? Was I just avoid- ing to work on an article that I had promised myself to write for the Per- son-Centred Quarterly? So ironically, what I was doing as I tried to piece together the snippets of news coming out of the Ukraine as they rever- berated through the various news outlets, suddenly appeared to be a per- fect example of what I was trying to write about: magical thinking.
