Chapter 16
Introduction to: Funology 1
Mark Blythe and Peter Wright
These papers are published largely as they appeared in the 2003 edition. Chapter
authors were invited to write a note explaining how things have developed since
2003 or setting the context in which the 2003 chapter was written. These notes are
included at the start of each chapter. We would draw your attention to the long note
added by Wright and McCarthy to Chap. 20 which in many ways sets the scene for
the whole book.
Sadly two of our authors have died since 2003, Kees Overbeeke (Chaps. 17, 37
and 38) and John Karat (Chap. 26). The relevant chapters include notes about these
authors and their considerable contributions to HCI. We were unable to make
contact with two sets of authors in the 2003 volume and so we do not have
permission to republish them.
As well as the chapters from the 2003 edition we have included the introductory
material from that edition. The chapters were divided into three sections: theories
and concepts; methods and techniques, and case studies in design.
