H Horney-Coolidge Tridimensional Inventory (HCTI) Frederick L. Coolidge and Shannon E. Matlock University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs, CO, USA Synonyms HCTI Definition The Horney-Coolidge Tridimensional Inventory (HCTI; Coolidge 2012) is a 57-item operationa- lization of Karen Horneys tridimensional theory (Horney 1945, 1950). The HCTI has three main scales, which measures moving toward people (compliant type), moving against people (aggressive type), or moving away from people (detached type). Each of the 19 items on each scale is measured on a 4-point Likert-type scale. Each of the three main scales has three subscales, all based strictly upon her published criteria for each type but derived through factor analysis. Introduction The Horney-Coolidge Tridimensional Inventory (HCTI; Coolidge 2012) is an operationalization of Karen Horneys tridimensional personality the- ory (Horney 1945). It consists of 57 items with 3 scales measuring her 3 types of people: moving toward people (compliant), moving against peo- ple (aggressive), and moving away from people (detached). Each scale contains 19 items, and each item is measured on a 4-point Likert scale ranging from (1) hardly ever to (4) nearly always. It takes approximately 1015 min to complete and is designed for persons ages 16 and above. There are also two signicant other forms to assess either a man or a woman. There is also a childrens form (parent as respondent) with 45 items, designed to assess children ages 5 years and above. The HCTI is an operationa- lization of Karen Horneys tridimensional personality theory, which may be considered a comprehensive yet parsimonious theory because it captures both normal and abnormal personali- ties along its three dimensions. HCTI Scales, Facets, and Forms Overview The three main scales of the HCTI, compliance, aggression, and detachment, have three facets each, which were empirically derived by principal components analysis. There are three HCTI forms: self-report, signicant other male target, and signicant other female target. # Springer International Publishing AG 2018 V. Zeigler-Hill, T.K.
