Rev. Adm. UFSM, Santa Maria, v. 13, Ed. Especial Engema, p. 1314-1331, 2020 - 1314 - ORGANIZATIONAL SOCIALIZATION IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE: ON THE ACTIONS AND PERCEPTIONS OF NEWCOMER AND EXPERIENCED EMPLOYEES ABSTRACT Purpose – This study aims to explain how the process of organizatonal socializaton of newcomers occurs in a public faculty. Design/methodology/approach – This qualitatve and interpretatvist research was conducted under an inter- actonist approach. We interviewed 14 newcomers and also experienced government employees from a state public faculty in São Paulo. The content of the interviews was analyzed by a categorizaton process. Findings – The fndings show that socializaton of newcomers is self-motvated, informal, non-insttutonalized, infuenced by the normatve nature of work and insufcient support given by the group. Newcomers’ admission into the workplace does not cause serious conficts or tensions that could lead to changes in the workplace. It is the proactve behavior of the newcomers that allows them to adapt to work and know traditons, beliefs and history of the organizaton. Research limitatons/implicatons – The limitaton of this study is the context of a public university’s workplace. Practcal implicatons – This research allows the organizaton to get informaton about the triangular relatonship between challenge, support and trust which could have direct efects on the newcomers’ workplace learning. Social implicatons – We propose that the organizaton creates a workplace in which the employees can feel strong bonds of solidarity and collectvism, and in which they could have concrete opportunites to realize that their work can contribute to something important, impactng, in the group and in the organizaton. Originality/value – This study artculates the concepts of organizatonal socializaton, proactve behavior and self-socializaton, which may provide future implicatons for public management in universites.
