Abstract
The present investigation has been undertaken to study the deformation and densification characteristics of Mn added P/M plain
carbon steel. Cold upsetting was carried out on the sintered preforms of Fe-0.2%C, Fe-0.2%C-0.5%Mn, Fe-0.2%C-2.0%Mn low
alloy steels using flat dies. Dimensional changes of the preforms after uniform incremental loads were accurately measured and
the density was also evaluated. Further, the photomicrographs of the alloy steels reveal that addition of Mn leads to the formation
of undissolved carbides in the grain structure. Increased Mn content leads to work hardening effect during cold deformation
thereby reducing the deformation as well as densification.

1. Introduction
The built-in porosity in pressed and sintered products is one of the key factors causing reduction in mechanical
properties of P/M alloys. The final density of the sintered P/M parts plays an important role in determining the
properties and characteristics of the components. In order to improve the density of sintered products, additional
post-sintering operation may be carried out on the preforms. Processes such as cold forging, extrusion and cold and
