Abstract VARIED INTERFACE RELATIONS BETWEEN BUILDINGS AND STREETS TOWARDS THE QUALITY OF SOCIAL INTERACTIONS IN COMMERCIAL CORRIDORS Active and passive social interactions in a city have the potential to take place between the interface of buildings and streets. Building and street interface is the in-between space of building and streets. The various relations of building and street interface can contribute to the quality of social interactions, particularly in a commercial corridor. The relative theories revealed that physical characteristics of buildings includes building lines, building setback, building width, building depth, building corners and attributes; and the physical characteristics of streets which are pedestrian lanes, bicycle lanes, median, street furniture, and ephemeral objects contributed to the quality of social activities and interactions in the in-between space of buildings and streets. This study examines the interface quality between buildings and streets along 2.5 kilometres of Lippo Karawaci’s commercial corridor. This study discovered that the physical characteristics of buildings and streets interfaces with direct/transparent typology and setback pedestrian typology encourage active social interactions, while the car setback typology, direct/opaque typology, typology boring encourages passive social interactions. The impermeable/blank typology was found has neither active nor passive social interaction. This study may have an implication on the design of buildings and streets interface should be taken into account for future planning of the quality of the public realm. Keywords: Interface, Buildings, Streets, Social Interactions, Commercial Corridors.
