ABSTRACT Rework is a major challenge in public building construction projects and adversely affects overall construction project performance. This research analysed the rework triggers in public building construction projects in Rivers State, Nigeria. The quantitative survey approach was adopted and structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Rework triggers were categorized into design, construction errors and change in design and construction phases. Sample size was 52 respondents comprising of construction industry professionals in Rivers State. Mean score was used to rank the perception of the professionals on the rework triggers and Kendall’s coefficient of concordance was employed to measure the degree of agreement of the professionals on the identified rework triggers within the categories. The study results showed 10 strong rework triggers ranked very high out of the 31 studied causing problems in public building construction projects that must be checkmated to ensure project success. The results suggest that the causative factors of rework in both design and construction stages are similar. The level of agreement among the professionals on the rework triggers related to errors in design and construction phases is low. The study recommended that a good organizational quality management system and the use of competent workforce are paramount to reducing the occurrence of rework.
