The relations between environmental variables (minimum temperature,daily thermal oscillation, rainfall and atmosphericpressure) and the onset of the spawningperiod of the common frog (Rana tem- poraria) in the Atlantic region of the BasqueCountry(Northern Spain) is analyzed. The onset of the spawn- ing period is coincident with a change in temperatureoccurring four days prior to spawning.Atmospheric pressure looksnot as a related factor, whereas the influence of rain seemsto become apparent over a longer period of time. En el presente trabajo se analizan las relaciones existentes entre algunas variables ambientales (temperatura mínima, oscilación térmica diaria, precipitación y presión atmosférica) y el iniciode la época de puesta de la rana bermeja(Ranatemporaria) en la región atlántica del País Vasco (Norte de España). El inicio del período de puesta está motivado por el cambiode temperaturasque tiene lugar cuatro días antes de la misma. La presión atmosferica no manifiesta relación alguna, mientras que la lluvia pareceejercer su influencia sobre un período de tiempo mayor que el aqui estudiado. Introduction The biological cycle of the common frog (Rana temporaria L.) in the Atlantic region of the Basque country presents some remarkable differences in comparison to other Euro- pean areas such as Great Britain (Savage, 1961) or the Pyrenees at the Iberian Penin- sula (Balcells, 1956, 1975). Its annual cycle is not interrupted by a hibernation period and the spawning is initiated at the beginning of the winter (Bea, 1981 and personal observations). Scccion dc Vertebrados.
