518 September and October 2022. Volume 11. Num 4 Background and Aims Blindness is one of the major health problems and diseases, such as corneal opac- ity, cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneraton due to diabetes are recognized as the most important causes of bilateral blindness worldwide. Among these factors, corneal diseases are con- sidered as an important cause of blindness. The aim of this study was to review the prevalence, causatve agents, treatment methods, and also the use of keratoprosthesis or artfcial cornea as the last opton to restore vision to blind patents with severe corneal injuries. Methods Studies related to the subject were collected and reviewed using valid databases, such as PubMed and Google Scholar. Results Out of more than 1000 artcles in the feld of the artfcial cornea, about 70 related artcles were selected and reviewed. Conclusion Generally, keratoprosthesis is used for patents for whom corneal transplantaton is not pos- sible or the risk of corneal transplantaton rejecton is high. The patent’s current conditon and the out - come of the patent’s anterior and posterior segment examinatons, previous treatments and surgeries, and the medicatons used should be considered. If a person has advanced retnal disease or glaucoma, he/she is not a good candidate for keratoprosthesis. If the patent’s vision in either eye is within the range of light percepton or hand movement detecton, while the optc nerve and macula are healthy, it is ap- propriate to use keratoprosthesis. It can be said that there is stll no type of keratoprosthesis that can be used without side efects and for all patents in need, but researchers are stll trying to improve the quality of keratoprostheses, which can restore patents’ lost vision with minimal complicatons.
