WSPÓŁCZESNE WYZWANIA EVOLUTION OF CENTRAL DISTRICTS IN ŁÓDŹ IN THE CONTEXT OF URBAN SHRINKAGE. CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES ABSTRACT: Łódź is a city with high-scale social problems as well as those relating to the developed environ- ment. Te solution to them is large-scale urban renewal of the central part of the city. It encompasses, among others, the 30-hectare area located in the center of Łódź. Te importance of this area for the functioning of the city is crucial due to its transitional character – between the New Centre of Łódź and the railway station (under construction at the moment) and Piotrkowska Street, which is a representative, retail and historical axis of the city. Tis article is aimed at assessing development prospects of this area of the city and outlining steps necessary for including this part of the city in a broader revitalization process of the downtown. Due to its location, which predestines the discussed area for transitional pedestrian trafc, the considerations presented in this article contribute to the broad problem of a pedestrian-friendly city. KEY WORDS: Łódź, revitalization, pedestrian trafc, pedestrian-friendly city, urban space Wprowadzenie Jednym z najważniejszych wyzwań, przed którymi stoi cywilizacja człowieka, jest rozwój zrównoważony (rozwój trwały). Rozumiany jest on jako proces ciągłych zmian, w którym eksploatacja zasobów, rozwój technologiczny, kierunki inwestycji itp. są rea- lizowane zgodnie z naszymi potrzebami, w taki jednak sposób, by nie umniejszać szans przyszłych pokoleń na dalszy rozwój. W myśl tej idei od nas zatem zależą nie tylko nasze osiągnięcia, ale także dokonania przyszłych pokoleń (zob. Our common future…). Rozwój zrównoważony stał się elementem idei urbanistycznych takich jak: Transit Oriented Development (TOD), Compact City, New Urbanizm, Resilient City (szerzej m.in. Stangel 2013).
