Pastoral Psychology, Vol. 52, No. 6, July 2004 ( C 2004) Reliability and Validity of a French Translation of a Short Scale of Attitude Toward Christianity Christopher Alan Lewis 1,3 and Leslie J. Francis 2 The reliability and validity of a French translation of the 7-item short form of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity was examined among a sample of 462 female French university students. Analysis supports the reliability and validity of the scale and commends it for further use among French speaking samples. KEY WORDS: Francis Scale; attitude toward Christianity; French. The Francis Scale of Attitude Toward Christianity Francis (Francis, 1978, 1989) was developed to aid researchers monitor change and establish correlates of attitude toward Christianity among 8 to 16 year-olds. The scale is a 24-item self-report measure concerning affective response to God, Jesus, Bible, prayer, and church, scored on a 5-point scale ranging from “agree strongly” through “un- certain” to “disagree strongly.” Scores range from 24–120, with higher scores indicating a more positive attitude toward Christianity. Satisfactory levels of reliability and validity have been reported for the 24- item scale among school-aged samples in England (Francis, 1987, 1989), Kenya (Fulljames & Francis, 1987), Nigeria (Francis & McCarron, 1989), Northern Ireland (Francis & Greer, 1990; Greer & Francis, 1991), and Scotland (Gibson, 1989; Gibson & Francis, 1989). More recently, a 7-item short form has been developed (Francis, Greer, & Gibson, 1991), by selecting the 7 items with the highest item-to-total correlations from the full 24-item scale. The short form was intended to replace the 24-item version when administration time or space is limited 1 Dr. Christopher Alan Lewis is Lecturer in Psychology, University of Ulster at Magee College, Northern Ireland. 2 The Revd Professor Leslie J.
