Veronica Bianca T. Joven Prof. Valila BAPR 2-1D Activity 3 - Film Review Historical films are exciting films to watch. They provide us the visual details of how our history happened. It gives an elevated imagery of what we read in history articles. As a visual learner, I am thankful for these kinds of films as they provide more than what I only imagined. Watching “Heneral Luna” by Jerrold Tarog and “Sakay” by Raymond Red made me feel mixed emotions. All throughout both of the films, I was in awe because they give me goosebumps on another level. Having a better view of what really happened through the acting of actors made me realize and understand more how brutal and hard the struggle of Filipinos in our history. Heneral Luna As for the first film I watched which is Heneral Luna, I learned a lot about him and his position in our history. General Antonio Luna was outstandingly performed by John Arcilla. The film was very realistic starting from the places where the shooting of scenes took place, the outlook and costumes of characters, and especially the way the actors act that gives the excitement and atmosphere of the film. Words of profanity are said but it was not a bad side of the film. In fact, for me it adds to the originality of the film. General Antonio Luna came from a well-off family. He was able to study medicine in Europe where he first discovered how different the lives of Filipino were in the Philippines versus the life of Europeans. Knowing this, I was shocked because typically those who experience first-hand oppression from colonizers are the ones who really aim for independence and justice. However, Luna having such privileges in life still chose to fight for the independence of our motherland than focusing on his profession as a doctor. He was part of the Propaganda Movement together with his brother, Juan Luna. This is where I first realized the patriotism of Luna.
