An approach to the study of concubinage in the Archbishopric of Lima (1606-1609) Jorge Luis Rojas Runciman 1 Resumen: Este artículo investiga cómo un gobierno eclesiástico, en sede vacante, intentó combatir un delito muy generalizado: el amancebamiento. Con el fortalecimiento de la administración de justicia, las autoridades eclesiásticas pensaban que tenían las herramientas necesarias para detener esta relación ilícita que atentaba contra el modelo matrimonial y el cuerpo social. No obstante, en el terreno, se toparon que el amancebamiento no se limitaba únicamente a la relación de pareja, sino que era un fenómeno social complejo y que, a su alrededor, se tejían relaciones, solidaridades y vínculos sociales entre sus practicantes y el entorno social, tolerando el amancebamiento a pesar de ser considerado un pecado muy grave. Abstract: This paper investigates how the one ecclesiastical government in “sede vacante” tried to fight a widespread crime: concubinage. With the strengthening of the justice administration, the ecclesiastical authorities thought they had the tools to stop this kind of illicit relationship, which attacks the model of marriage and the social body. Nevertheless, in the ground, they encountered that the concubinage was not just the relationship, because, throughout it, relations, solidarities, and social links were built between the practitioners and their social environment, tolerating the concubinage despite it was considered a grave sin.
