MECANISMOS DE ATENUACIÓN: DE AYER A HOY SILVIA IGLESIAS RECUERO Universidad Complutense de Madrid Instituto Universitario Menéndez Pidal RESUMEN A partir de los resultados de los estudios sobre la atenuación lingüística en el español actual, se describen y se clasifican las estrategias pragmáticas y los meca- nismos lingüísticos de atenuación en el acto de habla de petición en el español clásico. Para ello se han analizado las secuencias de petición de un corpus forma- do por cartas de particulares e interacciones dialógicas literarias, que reflejan una amplia gama de relaciones sociales y que pertenecen a distintas variedades diafási- cas. Aunque hay similitud en cuanto a las estrategias empleadas por los hablantes del español clásico y actual, los resultados del análisis muestran diferencias cuan- titativas y cualitativas con respecto a los mecanismos lingüísticos empleados, que podrían estar relacionados con la distinta concepción de las relaciones interperso- nales en una sociedad estamental con la de los Siglos de Oro. LINGUISTIC RESOURCES OF MITIGATION: FROM YESTERDAY TO TODAY ABSTRACT Following the findings of linguistic mitigation studies for contemporary Spanish, we describe and classify the pragmatic strategies and the linguistic resources of mitigation for the speech act of request in Classical Spanish. We analyse a corpus consisting of private letters and literay dialogical interactions which reflect a wide range of social relations and different linguistic registers and styles. Although the strategies developed by Classical Spanish speakers are found to be similar to those of contemporary speakers, there are cuantitative and cualitative differences in the preferences for specific linguistic constructions that could be related to differences in the way interpersonal relations are understood and managed in a rigidly stratified society like that of Spanish Golden Age.
