RESUMEN La especialización y concentración selectiva de variadas funciones sociales en un sector específco de las ciudades, referen al surgimiento de un lugar con características pro- pias y jerarquía. Un lugar que recibe, por su importancia, la denominación de centro. Este artículo tiene como objetivos, revelar la evolución del concepto de centralidad en el espa- cio tradicional de San Cristóbal y establecer la importancia que adquirió la vialidad como declaración de modernidad y factor de transformación. La Quinta y Séptima Avenidas, corredores urbanos ideados desde el Plano Regulador —en tanto expresiones del urbanismo moderno— sacu- dieron la estructura de la ciudad tradicional. Ambas vías constituyeron detonantes de las mutaciones que se ges- taron en San Cristóbal durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Mutaciones que llevan a aforar, con mayor fuerza, los valores de la centralidad económica, en detrimento de otros valores socioculturales y simbólicos. ABSTRACT The selective specialization and concentration of different social functions in a specifc city’s area refers to the emer- gence of a place with its own characteristics and hierarchy. A place that is called the center, because of its importance. This paper has two objectives: to reveal the evolution of the concept of centrality in the San Cristóbal‘s traditional area and to point out the importance of new roads as a declaration of modernity and a factor of transformation. The Quinta and Séptima Avenidas, urban corridors devised from the Plano Regulador —as expressions of modern ur- banism— shook the structure of the traditional city. Both roads were as detonation of the mutations that appeared in San Cristóbal during the second half of the twentieth century. These mutations make stronger the values of the economic centrality in detriment of other social cultural and symbolic values.
